The Copthorne Curriculum

The staff, pupils, parents and Governors of Copthorne have worked together to design a balanced, rich and inspiring curriculum which specifically meets the academic, personal and social needs of our pupils whilst adhering to the requirements of the Primary National Curriculum 2014. In line with the school ethos that ‘Everyone can achieve at Copthorne’ leaders and governors are determined to offer all pupils a rounded set of experiences that prepare them well not only for their next steps in learning, but also for their life as citizens of a compassionate society.

The National Curriculum Programmes of Study are used as our core content and key, subject specific objectives and skills are repeated across each milestone, to ensure that subject specific knowledge and skills are strong.

A high priority is placed on the development of language skills from the outset for all pupils. The school provides opportunities for high quality talk and strong phonics teaching using Little Wandle.

Building Strong Knowledge and Long‑Term Learning

At Copthorne, we design our curriculum so that children build their knowledge steadily and securely over time. Each subject is carefully sequenced, meaning new learning connects clearly to what pupils have already been taught. This helps children deepen their understanding and improves their ability to remember important ideas for the long term.

Teachers plan learning in small, purposeful steps, so pupils are never overwhelmed. We revisit key concepts regularly through discussions, short review activities, guided practice and opportunities to apply previous learning in new contexts. This consistent revisiting strengthens pupils’ long‑term memory and boosts confidence, especially in subjects where knowledge builds cumulatively, such as reading, maths, history and science.

Inclusion and Support for Every Child

We truly believe that ‘everyone can achieve at Copthorne’, no matter their starting point or background. We hold high ambitions for all our pupils, including those with SEND and those who may face additional barriers to learning. At Copthorne, inclusion isn’t an add‑on, it’s at the heart of everything we do. We want every pupil to feel valued, to know they belong and to have every opportunity to achieve their very best.

We provide the right help at the right time. This may include targeted support, additional adult guidance, adapted resources or carefully planned interventions. Whatever the approach, we make sure it enables pupils to take part fully in lessons and experience the same rich, well‑sequenced curriculum as their classmates.

Experiences That Enrich Learning and Broaden Horizons

We also know how important it is to give children experiences that build their cultural capital and widen their understanding of life beyond school. Children are given many opportunities to learn through first-hand experience and a broad range of trips and visits are scheduled are planned each half term for all classes, including but not limited to visits to galleries, museums and libraries, residential outdoor adventure training, tours of local businesses and contrasting localities e.g. the seaside and other schools.

Opportunities for children to perform are embedded through all phases. Class performance assemblies, a KS1 Nativity, Year 6 Performance and ‘Copthorne’s Got Talent’ all provide a space for children to act, sing, dance and perform, developing essential communication skills.

As an inner‑city Bradford school, we are proud to celebrate the richness of our local heritage. At the same time, we actively promote an understanding of the wider diversity found across the UK. Pupils learn about different cultures, viewpoints and ways of life, helping them develop respect, curiosity and empathy.
